History, philosophy, literature, the arts interpret the human experience in all of its forms and glory. As a whole, the Humanities reflect the best and worst of ourselves. They offer heroes and heroines as well as villains; solutions to life’s challenges, analogies and metaphors. The compendium of these stories provide a handbook for being human. For recovering addicts, studying the Humanities provide solace, create context and offer a bigger and deeper experience of the world beyond the boundaries of addiction. Stanford University is currently offering a course in the Humanities for recovering women at Hope House, a residential drug and treatment facility in Redwood City, Ca.
